Hillside Contemporary

This residence was designed to nestle into a steeply sloping site, creating a protected family compound seamlessly integrated into the site. The most important considerations for the owners were sustainability and taking advantage of spectacular views toward a stream on the east side of the site. The plan was arranged by separating functional areas into three sections of building: sleeping; living / entertaining; and quiet space. These three elements were arranged in a “U” shape, giving all of the rooms vistas through a private courtyard overlooking the stream. Walls on the west and north sides were almost completely buried in the earth providing protection from heat loss / gain, and the southern and east facing walls were entirely glazed to take advantage of passive solar heat, which is stored in concrete floors.
