MCRC: HERO

Recognized as a national model, MCRC HERO is one of only two such facilities funded in part by a Federal demonstration grant. The facility serves the Baltimore metropolitan area and offers a single-source service center for people with HIV/AIDS. Focusing on people with lives often complicated by multiple medical diagnoses and poverty, the center provides medical care, meals, substance abuse treatment, mental health services, housing services, case management, vocational training, education, financial counseling, recreation, nutritional counseling, and day care services. After a city-wide search, this triangular site was selected for its central location and access to multimodal public transportation. The site consisted of vacant lots at the south and west corners, a group of five vacant, 19th century rowhouses along the western edge of Maryland Avenue, and a two-story, 1930’s warehouse addition at the rear of the rowhouses.
