The firm worked closely with UMMS project representatives, the Anesthesiology Department’s Chief and Medical Staff, Code Officials, and the UMMS CM for the complete interior demolition and renovation of both the Nursing Wing and the Anesthesiology Department. New spaces included administration offices for faculty, staff, residents and pain nurses; library, conference rooms, lecture hall; kitchen; toilet / shower / locker facilities; resident bedroom suite; reception area; and support spaces.
The project was phased to complete the first wing, move the department out of its existing facilities, then complete the second wing. The phasing was complicated by difficult utility distribution and protection of adjacent operating rooms. The wings were fully upgraded to meet the stringent I-2 fire resistive construction type classification and healthcare agency regulatory compliance. Renovations included replacing all exterior windows and the insertion of special oversized fire windows to accommodate a future atrium.
